Divorce Won’t Solve Your Problems
I just finished Screwtape Letters, which is apropros to today’s spiritual warfare. C.S. Lewis says this: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”
As Applied to Divorce
There are two equal and opposite errors in which our race can fall about marriage. One is to believe marriage solves all your problems. The other is to believe that divorce solves all your problems.
Never Celebrate Divorce
I see so many ads out there like these and it makes me sad.
Marriage is something created by God, and humans have completely destroyed it and are now celebrating its demise.
They’re all lies. Divorce won’t make you happier. Nor will it solve all your problems. In fact, it will create MORE problems.
Let’s examine.
Divorce Doesn’t Make You Richer
If money is the measure for happiness, then NO.
You’ve heard that you get “half, or 1/2” in divorce.
Wrong!
You actually start with 1/4. Why? Because you are dividing all assets into two, and now you have TWO households.
1/2 divided by 2 = 1/4.
At BEST, it’s 1/4. If you hire attorneys, forensic accountants, child custody evaluators…you’re paying for these experts, which makes it LESS than 1/4.
Divorce Doesn’t “Free” You
If you divorced for “freedom”, I hate to tell you this, but most people are not “free” after divorce. Especially if you have children.
You will need to “share” your children. You will need to pay support.
Or, you will need to live on support paid by someone else.
Whether you’re the payor, or recipient, it’s less than if you were intact.
Divorce Doesn’t Solve Your Problems
You just trade it for other problems. The truth is, we are all incredibly broken. Just read the news. And culture is getting worse.
The only way to fix it is to first fix our hearts. Our human hearts long for something more than what any human can provide.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiates 3:11
Please Do Everything You Can to Cherish Your Marriage
In conclusion, if you are blessed with marriage, cherish it. If you are blessed to be single, cherish it.
Do not ever believe the lie that marriage or divorce will solve your problems. They don’t and won’t. Only God can. Stay out of my office!
