Guideline Child Support

If you are separate with children, one of the main issues that needs to be resolved is the amount of child support to be paid or received.

In California, guideline child support is ordered based on a guideline calculator.

Why Mediate This Issue?

If both parties are employed and receive W-2’s with no other income (such as dividends, stocks, rental income), guideline should be not be complicated.  Just plug and chug.

The complications arise when one or both parties are self-employed, or where there are multiple sources of income, such as what is guideline becomes “murky”.

Can We Agree to NO Child Support?

There are requirements that need to be met if you are deviating from guideline child support.  In mediation, you can discuss with a trained mediator to formulate the best arrangement for your family.

What Does Child Support Cover?

If you go to Court, there will be a monthly amount ordered based on income.  But what does it cover?  Private school tuition?  Tutoring? After school? Clothing? Roblox subscriptions?   Horseback riding lessons?

This is what makes divorce so expensive – all the fighting.  In mediation, you will have a chance to sit down with a neutral faciliator and discuss everything in detail.

Spend the money on your children, not your attorneys!
