How To Request a Religious Accommodation

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Politely Seek an Accommodation

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?  But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.  For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

If your employer implemented a policy or practice that conflicts with your faith, you may politely seek an accommodation.  Start by requesting your manager to meet with you.  Be prepared to give an answer as to why the policy conflicts with your faith.

Your manager may not be familiar with your faith, and the law does not require employers to automatically know what you want and accommodate you based on what you request.

Provide Sufficient Information About Your Religion

You do not need to use specific language, but should provide sufficient information to make your employer aware that an accommodation is needed because of a religious conflict.

You may explain the religious nature of the belief, observance, or practice.

Both Parties Engage in Interactive Process

Both you and your employer have roles to play in resolving an accommodation request.

The interacive process requires both employer and employee to cooperate and be flexible in search for the right solution regarding an accommodation.

Some Institutions Have Their Own Forms

Some institutions have their own forms, that look like this: you may use these forms.
